Water Shut-off Systems

Water security products can be applied as point of use systems and whole house systems.

  • Point of use systems are typically used to prevent water damage from an individual water source or appliance and will either cut off the water or power supply to the offending appliance.
  • Whole house systems automatically shut off the water at the beginning of the domestic supply line in the dwelling if a leak is detected anywhere in the building.

While we are familiar with many point of use systems and do recommend them to add additional layers of protection where appropriate, our focus remains with the unparalleled value of whole house systems.

The whole house systems we recommend use two basic types of technology: sensor based and timer based.

  • Sensor based systems rely on water sensors located primarily in high-risk locations around the building such as bathrooms, kitchens, icemakers, hot water heaters and washing machines among others. When these sensors detect water they send a signal back to an automatic water shutoff valve installed on the incoming water main to prevent a catastrophic loss.
  • Timer based systems rely on a flow-sensor and automatic water shutoff valve. This sensor and valve communicate directly with a control panel through which the user can program custom settings for flow volume and time. Any continuous flow that exceeds this combination of volume and time will trigger an alarm and turn off the water to prevent catastrophic damage.

While all of these products are high quality and reliable, the best system for each client can be narrowed down after our plumbing assessment is completed and budget and lifestyle integration are considered.

All of the following systems can be connected to your home security system for additional monitoring and control. Here is a brief overview of the most popular systems.

SENSOR BASED WATER SHUT-OFF SYSTEMS

WaterCop

WaterCop flood sensors install near water using rooms and appliances. When water comes in contact with any of the sensors, a wireless signal is immediately broadcast to the WaterCop main valve causing the valve to close. Water flow is quickly cutoff to all areas of the home and any continuous flooding is stopped. Freeze sensors can also be integrated to alert you to potential damage from frozen pipes.

WaterCop PRO

The WaterCop Pro System installs on the main water line just as the standard system does but relies on wireless or hard-wired flood sensors located near water outlets and appliances. This version of the WaterCop system has addressable sensors which can be assigned numbers so that when water comes in contact with any of the sensors, a wireless signal is sent to the WaterCop main valve and optional monitoring station which closes the valve while the LCD readout indicates which sensor activated the alarm to make locating the origin of the leak easier.

TIMER BASED WATER SHUT-OFF SYSTEMS

FloLogic

FloLogic_System_side_0.jpgflologicswitch.pngThe FloLogic system uses a flow-sensor and an electronically actuated valve to constantly monitor water flow into the house. This system uses two main modes or timers; the “Home” and “Away” modes. These modes come preset from the factory but can be easily adjusted for different time and volume intervals to allow shorter or longer water usage for greater freedom while you are home and greater protection while you’re not. If water flows uninterrupted for a period of time longer than your settings, the shutoff valve is activated and an alarm sounds at the control panel. This system also includes a rechargeable back-up battery for power outages up to a week.

Leak Defense System

leakdefenderSwitch_0.pngleakdefenderwallmonitor_0.pngThe Leak Defense System uses a flow-sensor and an electronically actuated valve to constantly monitor water flow into the house. This system uses the “Home” and “Away” modes for adjustable time and volume intervals for your custom water use habits. While the timers can be adjusted at the touch-screen control panel according to personal preference, the flow settings for this system should be calibrated to each home individually after installation. Some models of this system will even give you a brief warning period of reduced flow after water usage has exceeded the timer so that you can shut off the water and prevent a full water shut-off and alarm condition.
